FAQ
Check out some of the most commonly asked questions from previous Focus Academy students and families below. If you don't find the answer to your question, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us and we'll get you the information you need.
Who do we serve?
Focus Academy serves bright middle and high school students (grades 5–12) who struggle to thrive in traditional school environments but do not require a highly restrictive or therapeutic setting.
Many of our students have:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (primarily Level 1 and some Level 2 students who are verbal and academically capable)
- ADHD
- Anxiety disorders
- Mild depression
- Executive functioning challenges
- Social skill deficits
- Twice-exceptional (2e) profiles
Our students are often described as “quirky,” creative, intelligent, and capable — but overwhelmed in large, fast-paced, or socially complex school environments.
Students who succeed at Focus Academy are generally:
- Working at or near grade level (with support)
- Able to participate in small-group instruction
- Verbal and able to engage in discussion
- Capable of independent work with structure and accountability
- Safe in a school setting (no aggressive or dangerous behaviors)
Admission is based on overall fit, not just diagnosis.
What grades does Focus Academy serve?
Focus Academy serves students in grades 5 through 12.
We specialize in middle and high school because these are the years when social complexity increases, executive functioning demands rise, and many bright students begin to struggle in traditional environments.
Enrollment is limited to maintain small class sizes and individualized attention. We offer rolling admissions when space allows.
Students graduate with a personalized graduation plan designed to prepare them for college, career training, or other post-secondary pathways.
What makes Focus Academy different from other schools?
Focus Academy is a microschool intentionally designed for bright students who need structure, accountability, and individualized pacing.
Unlike large traditional schools, we offer:
- Small class sizes
- Individualized academic pacing
- Close daily monitoring of progress
- Direct executive functioning support
- A structured, predictable environment
We are not a therapeutic day treatment program, and we are not a traditional special education department within a large campus. Our model combines academic rigor with high structure and personalized support.
Students are known well here. Their strengths are recognized, their challenges are addressed directly, and avoidance is not allowed to become a lifestyle.
We partner closely with families and expect students to engage, work, and grow.
Can I schedule a visit?
We begin with a brief phone call before scheduling a tour.
This initial conversation allows us to learn more about your student, answer preliminary questions, and determine whether Focus Academy may be an appropriate fit. Because our program is intentionally small and structured, not every student will be a match for our model.
If, after the call, it appears that Focus Academy could be a good fit, we will schedule an in-person tour.
During the tour, families will:
- Learn about our academic structure and individualized pacing
- Ask detailed questions about their child’s needs
- See our classrooms and learning environment
- Discuss next steps in the admissions process
Enrollment is limited in order to maintain small class sizes and personalized attention.
To request a callback and begin the process, please email info@focusacademyhouston.org or call 281-240-0663.
How does the admissions process work?
Our admissions process is designed to ensure mutual fit.
Step 1: Introductory Call Families begin by scheduling a brief phone call. During this conversation, we learn more about your student’s academic profile, behavioral history, and support needs.
Step 2: Tour If it appears that Focus Academy may be a good fit, we schedule an in-person tour. This allows families to see our environment, ask detailed questions, and better understand our structure and expectations.
Step 3: Trial Day After the tour, prospective students participate in a trial day. This allows the student to experience our classroom environment, expectations, and pacing. It also allows our staff to observe how the student responds to structure, instruction, and peer interaction. The trial day is an important part of determining whether Focus Academy is an appropriate placement.
Step 4: Review of Records We review relevant academic records and any evaluations to determine whether we can appropriately support your student.
Step 5: Enrollment Decision If both the family and school agree that Focus Academy is a good fit, enrollment paperwork and tuition agreements are completed to secure placement. Admission is based on overall fit, not solely on diagnosis or academic performance.
Is there a wait list?
Because Focus Academy intentionally maintains small class sizes, space is limited. When the program reaches capacity, we may establish a wait list. Placement from the wait list is based on space availability and overall program fit. We encourage families to begin the admissions process early, particularly for mid-year transitions or fall enrollment.
What documents do we need to apply?
Before or on the day of the tour, families must complete the Student Information Form located on our Admissions page at https://focusacademyhouston.org/admissions/. This form provides essential background information about your student and helps us prepare for your visit.
If moving forward after the trial day, families will complete the formal Application for Enrollment, also located on the Admissions page.
In addition, we request:
• Most recent report card or transcript
• Standardized testing results, if available
• Any relevant educational or psychological evaluations (such as neuropsychological evaluations, WISC-V results, IEP, or 504 plan)
• Behavioral or disciplinary history, if applicable
Providing complete documentation allows us to make a thoughtful and informed placement decision. Additional documentation may be requested depending on individual circumstances.
What does a typical school day look like?
Focus Academy provides a structured and predictable school day designed to support focus, accountability, and steady academic progress.
Students complete the majority of their academic coursework through an accredited online curriculum platform. This allows for individualized pacing while ensuring that students remain on track toward graduation requirements.
Throughout the day, teachers actively monitor student progress, provide direct support, offer clarification and mini-lessons when needed, and coach students in executive functioning skills such as organization, time management, task initiation, and effective note-taking. Students are expected to take meaningful notes to support comprehension and retention, and teachers provide guidance on how to do this well.
Students work in a supervised classroom environment. Devices are monitored, expectations are clear, and avoidance behaviors are addressed directly.
In addition to academics, students participate in structured social interaction, life skills development, and community-building activities. Breaks are scheduled and supervised to maintain balance while preserving the overall structure of the day.
Our environment is calm, organized, and consistent. Students know what to expect, and expectations remain steady from day to day.
Do students have homework?
Focus Academy is a non-homework school.
Students are expected to complete their academic work during the structured school day under teacher supervision. Because progress is monitored daily and goals are clearly defined, most coursework is completed before students leave campus.
If a student has been off task, refuses to engage, or falls significantly behind, they may be required to complete unfinished work at home or remain after school to complete assignments.
Our model emphasizes focused productivity during school hours so that evenings can be used for rest, extracurricular activities, therapy appointments, and family time while maintaining steady academic progress.
How is academic progress monitored?
Academic progress at Focus Academy is monitored daily.
Teachers track lesson completion, quiz and test performance, pacing toward target completion dates, and overall course mastery. Students are given individualized daily goals to ensure they remain on track and are making steady forward progress.
Because coursework is completed in a supervised classroom environment, teachers can see student screens, monitor engagement, and intervene immediately if a student is off task or struggling.
If a student falls behind, we address it quickly through increased monitoring, goal adjustments, direct support, or course modifications when appropriate.
Progress is communicated regularly with families so that everyone remains aligned.
Our goal is not just course completion, but meaningful understanding and steady movement toward graduation requirements.
Is Focus Academy accredited?
Focus Academy has successfully completed the accreditation process and is currently awaiting final recognition of the accreditation service by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), which is expected in Spring 2026.
Our academic structure, graduation requirements, record-keeping practices, and operational policies are aligned with established accreditation standards.
Students earn credits toward a high school diploma issued by Focus Academy, and official transcripts are provided.
We are committed to maintaining high academic standards and ensuring that our students are prepared for college, workforce programs, or other post-secondary pathways.
Will my child graduate with a recognized diploma?
Yes. Students who complete graduation requirements at Focus Academy earn a high school diploma issued by Focus Academy.
Our graduation plans are aligned with Texas high school credit requirements and are designed to prepare students for college, workforce training programs, or other post-secondary pathways.
Each student follows an individualized graduation plan based on their academic history, strengths, and future goals. We work closely with families to ensure that credits are earned appropriately and transcripts accurately reflect coursework completed.
Official transcripts are issued directly by Focus Academy.
Can students go to college after Focus Academy?
Yes. Students who meet graduation requirements at Focus Academy are eligible to apply to colleges, universities, trade schools, and workforce training programs.
We provide official transcripts and guidance throughout the application process. Students may also pursue dual credit coursework when appropriate.
Our graduates have enrolled in and completed coursework at institutions including Sam Houston State University, the University of Southern California (USC), the University of Houston, Texas State Technical College (TSTC), Alvin Community College, Lone Star College, Wharton County Junior College, and Houston Community College (HCC). Several alumni have earned degrees or certifications, while others are currently pursuing their programs.
Because our program emphasizes accountability, executive functioning, and independent work skills, students are prepared for the expectations of post-secondary education.
As with any school, college admission and degree completion depend on the individual student’s academic performance, goals, and chosen institutions.
How do you support executive functioning and social development?
Executive functioning and social growth are core components of the Focus Academy model.
Throughout the school day, teachers provide direct coaching in organization, time management, task initiation, planning, and follow-through. Students receive individualized daily goals and consistent accountability to help build independence and responsibility.
Teachers also guide students in effective note-taking, study strategies, and self-monitoring skills so that learning extends beyond course completion.
Social development is supported through structured peer interaction, small group collaboration, and guided problem-solving. Because our environment is small and predictable, students have frequent opportunities to practice communication, conflict resolution, and appropriate social behavior in real time.
We address avoidance behaviors directly and coach students toward growth, resilience, and self-advocacy.
Our goal is not just academic progress, but the development of skills that prepare students for long-term success.
What are the behavioral expectations at Focus Academy?
Focus Academy maintains clear and consistent behavioral expectations in order to create a calm, safe, and productive learning environment.
Students are expected to:
• Remain on task during academic time
• Follow staff directions
• Use technology appropriately
• Treat peers and staff with respect
• Take responsibility for their work and behavior
Because we serve bright students who benefit from structure, avoidance behaviors are addressed directly. Teachers provide coaching and redirection, but students are expected to engage and participate.
We are not equipped to serve students with aggressive, unsafe, or highly disruptive behaviors. Maintaining a predictable and structured environment is essential to our model.
Our goal is growth, accountability, and skill development within a supportive setting.
How do you communicate with parents?
Clear and consistent communication with families is a priority at Focus Academy.
We provide regular updates regarding student progress, goal completion, and any concerns that arise during the school day. Because progress is monitored daily, communication is timely and proactive.
We utilize structured group communication as our primary method for updates, ensuring that parents, teachers, and administration remain aligned. Families are encouraged to check messages regularly.
Our goal is partnership. Students are most successful when school and home maintain consistent expectations and open communication.
What does tuition include?
Tuition at Focus Academy covers full-time enrollment in our structured academic program for grades 5–12.
Students learn in small-group classroom settings with individualized pacing and daily monitoring. While instruction and support are personalized, Focus Academy is not a one-to-one program.
Tuition includes supervised academic coursework, executive functioning coaching, daily progress monitoring, transcript management, graduation planning, and ongoing parent communication.
An annual supply fee is charged separately. Parents are also expected to purchase a Focus Academy logo t-shirt, which students wear during field trips and certain school activities.
Tuition is prorated for students who enroll mid-year.
Students are expected to provide their own laptop computer. Mac and PC laptops are acceptable. Chromebooks are strongly discouraged due to limitations with certain academic platforms and software.
Tuition does not include optional extracurricular activities or third-party program fees when applicable.
Specific tuition rates and payment options are available on our Admissions page under the Tuition document at https://focusacademyhouston.org/admissions/.
Do you offer scholarships or financial aid?
At this time, Focus Academy does not offer scholarships or financial aid.
As a small, independent microschool, tuition directly supports staffing, classroom supervision, and daily operations.
We understand that private education is a significant financial commitment and encourage families to carefully consider whether our program aligns with their financial circumstances before applying.
Do you participate in school voucher or ESA programs?
At this time, Focus Academy does not participate in school voucher or Education Savings Account (ESA) programs.
We are closely monitoring developments at the state level and may consider participation in the future if it aligns with our mission and operational structure. However, we do not anticipate participating for the 2026–2027 school year.
Do you offer rolling enrollment?
Yes. Focus Academy offers rolling enrollment when space is available.
Because we utilize an individualized pacing model, students may begin at various points throughout the school year rather than waiting for a new semester.
Tuition is prorated based on the student’s start date.
Enrollment at any time during the year is subject to space availability and successful completion of the admissions process, including the introductory call, tour, trial day, and record review.
We carefully evaluate fit to ensure that students can transition smoothly into our structured environment.
Can students transition back to a traditional school?
Yes. Students may transition back to a traditional public or private school if that is determined to be in their best interest.
Because Focus Academy aligns graduation requirements with Texas high school credit standards and maintains official transcripts, students have documentation of completed coursework.
Transition decisions are made in collaboration with families and, when appropriate, the receiving school. Placement and credit acceptance are ultimately determined by the receiving institution.
Our goal is to prepare students with the academic and executive functioning skills necessary to succeed in whatever setting best supports their long-term growth.
Is transportation provided?
Focus Academy does not provide transportation.
Parents are responsible for arranging daily drop-off and pick-up.
Because we are a small, structured program, maintaining consistent arrival and dismissal routines is important to the overall stability of the school day.
What happens if a student is not meeting expectations?
If a student is not meeting academic or behavioral expectations, we address concerns promptly.
Because progress is monitored daily, teachers are able to identify patterns of avoidance, incomplete work, or behavioral concerns early. Increased support, additional monitoring, and direct coaching are implemented as needed.
We communicate concerns with families and work collaboratively to reinforce expectations at home.
If a student consistently refuses to engage, demonstrates unsafe behavior, or is not responding to the level of structure and support we provide, we may determine that Focus Academy is not the appropriate placement.
Our goal is student growth and long-term success. Maintaining a safe, structured, and productive learning environment for all students is essential to our mission.
Do you offer extracurricular activities?
Focus Academy integrates enrichment and practical skill development into the school year.
Students participate in structured job skills activities designed to build responsibility, communication, and workplace readiness.
We host a book club once a week during the school day. Students engage with selected texts through audiobooks, teacher-led readings, or student readers, followed by guided group discussions to build comprehension, critical thinking, and conversational skills.
In addition, students participate in a cooking class at least once each school year, providing opportunities to develop life skills, teamwork, and independence.
Focus Academy is a non-homework school. Because academic work is completed during the school day, families have the flexibility to pursue independent extracurricular activities in the community after school hours.
As a small microschool, we do not offer large athletic programs or extensive club options. Our enrichment activities are intentionally structured and aligned with our focus on executive functioning, social growth, and real-world preparation.
What is the student-to-teacher ratio?
Focus Academy maintains an approximate 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio.
This small ratio allows for individualized pacing, daily monitoring, and consistent accountability while still providing meaningful peer interaction.
Because our classrooms are intentionally small, teachers are able to provide immediate support, address avoidance behaviors quickly, and coach executive functioning skills throughout the day.
Maintaining this ratio is essential to preserving the calm, structured environment that defines our program.
What curriculum do you use?
Focus Academy provides accredited online curriculum platforms for both core academic coursework and electives. This model allows students to work at an individualized pace while meeting established graduation requirements.
Courses are aligned with Texas high school credit standards and include English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign languages, and a range of elective offerings.
We utilize a variety of curriculum platforms and review them annually for effectiveness, alignment, and student outcomes. This ensures that our academic program remains current and responsive to student needs.
While instruction is delivered through structured online platforms, students complete their work in a supervised classroom environment. Teachers actively monitor progress, provide clarification, offer mini-lessons when needed, and coach students in executive functioning skills such as organization, note-taking, and time management.
Our curriculum model combines flexibility in pacing with consistent accountability and daily oversight.
Are students allowed to use personal phones during the school day?
Students turn in their personal phones each morning upon arrival.
Phones are stored during the school day and returned at dismissal.
This policy minimizes distractions and supports a focused, structured learning environment.
If a student is found with an unapproved device during the school day, additional consequences may be implemented.
Maintaining attention and reducing digital distractions are essential components of our academic model.
How many students are enrolled?
Focus Academy intentionally maintains a small total enrollment in order to preserve our structured and supportive learning environment.
We operate with a maximum of three classrooms and maintain an approximate 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio.
Limiting enrollment allows us to provide individualized pacing, daily monitoring, and consistent accountability while maintaining a calm and predictable school culture.
Because of our size, students are known well by staff, and concerns are addressed quickly and directly.
Do you provide therapy services?
Focus Academy is an academic program and does not provide therapy services.
While many of our students have diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, anxiety, or mild depression, we are not a therapeutic day treatment program.
We focus on structured academics, executive functioning coaching, and social skill development within a school environment.
Families are encouraged to continue any outside therapy services that support their child’s growth. We are happy to collaborate with licensed professionals when appropriate.
What makes a student successful at Focus Academy?
Students who thrive at Focus Academy are bright, capable learners who benefit from structure and accountability.
Successful students are willing to engage in their coursework, accept coaching, and work toward steady progress each day.
Because our model emphasizes responsibility and follow-through, students must be able to function safely in a classroom environment and participate in small-group instruction.
Families who partner closely with the school and reinforce expectations at home tend to see the greatest growth.
Our goal is progress, resilience, and skill development within a structured and supportive setting.
